Observation details
Initial comments: Birds first heard classic “kip” calls. Then seen as they started SINGING in the tree behind the parking lot!!!! I was able to get a recording! Birds then moved into the sunlight, feeding in the tree on the beach. Photos, best ones I’ve ever had the opportunity to get with this species. Video taken as well. I could hear them crack the pine cones! 1/31/23 Additional Comments: After the new call type was added to eBird, these bird which were first classified under Type 10 were assigned to Type 12 by someone other than myself. This prompted a deep dive down the rabbit hole by myself top figure out what happened! I found this information: https://finchnetwork.org/type-12-the-old-northeastern-red-crossbill The spectrogram of my recording shows calls at the beginning with steep downward ends to the "kip" calls, which points to Type 12 over Type 10, which lacks the downward ending. Calls matching Type 10 can be seen/heard throughout the rest of the recording.
