Observation details
Landed south of PL3 at about 11 (after not having been seen since 8:30 or so. Spectacular looks at about 60 feet, as it preened, ate, and slept. Description written on the way home: large shorebird with a long bill, inner half (maybe more) pinkish orange, outer part dark. Long dark legs. Head and neck rusty and without streaks. Lighter eyeline. Mantle with thick black spots, otherwise back and wings grayish brown. Tail solid black. Upper belly like head and neck. Some dark streaks below. Lower belly, underneath solid white (not sure exactly where it became white). Behavior: Feeding? or preening behavior included putting bill in the water and swinging side-to-side vigorously. Scratched its face repeatedly with a foot, occasionally used the bill for other feathers. Tucked head in in typical shorebird fashion, moved into the grasses a bit for sleep.
