Observation details
Heard from Judson Entrance. Calling from the woods to the north of Three Island Pond at about 7:30. Despite the dark conditions, I decided to go and try to find where this bird was and I was treated to a wonderful surprise. I pinpointed the bird down to a certain tract of woods and even with the dark conditions, I was able to actually see the bird. The slightly lightened sky allowed me to spot it in my binoculars with quite clarity for the time of day, and I was even able to make out the white throat patch. The bird was in an extremely tall tree (a dead evergreen from the look of it) and was at the tippy top. It’s larger size and “horns” were visible and it continued to call for the next 33 minutes I spent watching it. Truly one of my most special owl encounters and my first time *seeing* a GHOW since May. Loud, resonant call that travelled very far (I was still able to hear it about a half a mile away). Unlike any GHOW I’ve heard before except one: the Forest Ave individual. Due to the proximity of these two locations I believe these birds to be the same individual. However, I should note that due to cadence of the call of the bird I heard the other morning at Judson Entrance, I think that bird was a different individual despite the closer proximity of Judson Entrance to Forest Ave than of this location in the woods to Forest Ave.
