Observation details
ONE DAY WONDER (just like the Ancient Murrelet seen less than a year earlier 12/05/1995). First seen diving while I was at the North Boat Launch. Was sumitted to the CBRC as Marbled Murrelet, but with scope views, the neck pattern made it clear that it was of the "perdix" or Asiatic subspecies (subsequently elevated to species level, Long-billed Murrelet). Subspecific identification was based on the the lack of a white collar seen on Marbled Murrelet. Chatfield bird had an all dark nape and back of neck. A whitish "patch" on the rear of the head was easy to see. Black of the crown extended down to just below the eye and the demarcation was STRAIGHT form bill to back of head (see sketches). CBRC report and original notes photographed and included here. CBRC as 24-96-33. Notes show that besides me (the finder) other observers on that day: Steve Stachowiak, Jack Reddall, Dick Schottler, Norm Erthal, J.B. Hayes, Glenn Hageman, Joe Roller, Patty Echelmeyer, Duane Nelson Dave and Diane Mullineaux, M.Obs.
