Observation details
Medium-sized Tringa wader feeding in water 3-4 inches deep in a settling pond alongside the Manchester Ship Canal. Apparently a 2CY bird with the majority of the mantle and coverts ash-grey but with some dark brownish feathers (beginning of SP?). Distinct head pattern with whitish supercilium which broadened behind the eye and a dark line through the eye broadening into a dark grey patch behind the eye. Rest of head and neck pale grey with fine, dark striations and ending in what what appeared to be a faint gorget on the breast. Underparts largely white. Rump/uppertail coverts white, tail feathers grey. Decurved blackish bill looked quite heavy. First UK record since 1976, all the previous records were in autumn, apart from one on 18th April 1970 at Dornoch, Sutherland. British Birds 78(11): p549. Scanned sketch and photograph (© Peter Wheeler) from notebook.
