Observation details
First seen standing on a small renovation island in Pool 4A it was noticeably larger and quite a bit darker than the adult Ring-billed Gulls right next to it. Seconds after getting the scope up it took off and I was unable tot study it while it stood, thus I missed leg color, head shape, body structure. I quickly grabbed the camera, knowing I would not be able to see anything in flight to help me id this bird. In photos the bird appears to be a second summer year bird in molt with perhaps P1-P3, mantle, and median coverts complete. With the nearly white tail and rounder wing shape I thought it eliminated all gulls except Herring, but the dark mantle, dark new primary feathers and all brown wings were better pointed out by Amar Ayyash in the North America Gulls Facebook Page as good marks for Lesser Black-Backed Gull. I still have lots to learn, as this bird would have gone as an unknown without considerable help. Link for all photos https://www.flickr.com/gp/malcolmgold/97UwNu
