Steller's Eider, right, with Common Eiders
Observation details
We heard that a male had been seen by some birders the afternoon before. We located this bird today, with spotting scope. (Immature?) male photographed through scope, showing smaller than nearby Common and King Eiders, dark head with white on face, cinnamon colored chest and belly, dark back with white patches, dark tail. I showed my (poor) photos to Ab Steenvoorden (bird expert aboard MV Plancius cruise ship), who confirmed the ID, and told me he had found this eider there two weeks prior.
