Observation details
The bird of the day. This species is tough to find in our inland counties but this one didn't read the field guide and the Shands Pier seems to attract weird coastal species like this one. I didn't see it at first while scanning terns and then it walked across the pier from left to right and proceeded to sit between to of the bridge uprights facing into the wind. I snapped a couple poor photos, hindered by distance and heat shimmer. Unfortunately, Steve Raduns, who arrived moments after I spotted the bird, only got to see its rump sticking out from the edge of the wooden posts, but it was visible in the scope. It was a relatively large grayish shorebird standing on long grey legs and with a long, straight, heavy grey bill. Poor photos attached.
