Observation details
Heading S loosely with stream of BVSH from 11:06-11:07. Closest shearwater at the time, but not particularly close for La Jolla standards. Hail Mary photos. Darker blackish upperparts than BVSHs, clean white underparts, and extensive white on neck area wrapping up into auriculars were the initial features noticed in scope before going to camera and attempting photographs. Overall gist was of a cleaner looking bird with darker upperparts than BVSHs. Slightly overexposed (for the bird) photos show blackish upperparts, more extensive white on head/face, clean white underwings and undertail coverts, and white extending up around lower flanks near sides of uppertail. Apparently the first photographed from shore in San Diego County. NOTE: photos are crops only, no exposure edits; also more photos in checklist under "shearwater sp."
