Observation details
Rare** Bird flew over very low heading south east. When we first saw bird it was hovering over a dead snag, then started soaring in circles. Birds flight pattern was very nighthawk like with a lot of soaring with occasional deep, slow and stiff wings beats. Wings were fairly long and pointed and held slightly bent back. Under wings were very messy and overall dark with some patches of gray and some light areas at bases of primaries. Tail was long and fanned out with bold white bands. Head, chest and belly were a fairly light gray with a lighter gray head. Eye and the area around it was very dark. Bird was missing tail feathers and primaries on both wings. Bird was also feeding in flight by pulling leg forward and bending head under belly to eat out of foot. Bird was visible for about 5 minutes and I was able to get some great photos.
