Observation details
Much better views than the last time here (4 February, 1996); my notes state: "Jim and the others were present here watching the bird when I arrived, just upstream of the two Pacific Coast Highway bridges, at the San Juan Creek channel. We ended up getting nice, LONG views this time. Often the bird was only about 150 feet away, or less. We'd been hearing reports of black feathers being seen in the upperparts, and on this date we were able to see at least two distinct black feathers in the back, and probably one other just emerging into otherwise slate gray back feathers. Median wing coverts entirely white, while the greater coverts were mostly white, with some black centrally (along shaft?) in each feather. Primaries and secondaries mostly dark or dusky (i.e., NOT white). A thin white line was noticed just inside the upper edge of the black bib."
