Observation details
******MEGA rare. Drake foraging in duck flock in Knox-Marsellus. Picked out from Towpath dike. Small dabbler, about the size of Blue-winged Teal (of which there were several nearby) and markedly smaller than surrounding Mallards. Bold white eyebrow on dark mahogany head; speckled brown chest; strikingly plain gray sides with paler white fringe on shoulder and along side; pale flank patch and beige undertail; dark back with long ornately patterned coverts. Foraging most of the time I saw it, keeping head low and bill along surface water for extended periods, moving it from side to side similar to a shoveler.
