Observation details
Very rare from shore; minimum of three hanging around the pier at one time (viewed simultaneously and at times as close as 10 feet); at least two more observed by me personally flying by at medium range where plumage details and flight style were readily visible, while yet another was seen on the water while viewing the Western Grebe. It's possible some of these birds were repeats, given that they would occasionally vanish for long periods and reappear even at close range. However I still think this is a conservative count. Incredible to view them up close, several times observed swimming underwater after diving and before re-surfacing. Many photos.
