Observation details
I first saw this bird fly out from nearly under my feet, it landed 20 yards away on some floating vegetation, and retreated out of sight, but not before it gave me good looks. It was an adult in bright plumage, it flew with large yellow feet dangling behind, had a greenish back, purple head and belly, white pamper, bright red bill with yellow tip,and a light blue shield. (forehead) We hung around for a while, and the bird came back out and we got some photos. The area where the bird was hanging out was dense Alder thicket, with other brushy vegetation mixed in, including piles of driftwood pushed in by the flood. The entire area was under several feet of water, so the bird was moving around on the vegetation. Bird found late evening on the 28 April, 2016, then seen again on the 29th and 30th, also by many other observers: Victor Stoll, Alan Troyer, Leo Schrock, Adam, Evan, Seth (photographer) and Chad Beachy, Terry Witt, Shanna Ellis. Soon after this the Refuge Roads became flooded and inaccessible. (Before the bird left). This was a probable first County record, state bird for all my group, and lifer for many.
