Observation details
Seen at varying distances (~100 yds - 0.25 miles) through 10x bins and 20-60x scope. Adult bird similar in overall dimensions as a Black Tern but with striking black and white pattern. Upperside of the wings, the tail and the vent were white to gray-white. Head, back, breast to belly, and wing linings were a very dark sooty black. Its bill, when seen through a scope at its closest proximity and in good light, was a very deep blackish-red. Legs were bright red (orange-red) and differed from the black Tern's dark legs.
