Observation details

Foraging with Ring-billed Gulls behind Captain's Choice fish processing plant. First found by me on Dec 23 at the same location. **SUBSPECIFIC ID DETAILS** Slightly darker mantled than Ring-billed Gull and clearly paler than the Kamchatka Gull that spent 3 winters (2016, 2016/2017, and 2017/2018) at Meteghan wharf, Digby County. Also smaller and less bulky than Meteghan gull. Results of the primary key provided by Adriaens and Gibbins’ 2016 article ‘Identification of the Larus canus complex’ diagnostic to ‘canus’. Steps followed: B) P9 without obvious white tongue tip B4) P5 with complete black band B4a) P8 with white mirror B4a2) P6 with complete, symmetrical black band B4a2a) P7 with short black wedge on outer web (< or = ½ length of feather) + P9 with large mirror (> black tip) The very faint dark bill-band and complete and symmetrical black band on P5 and tiny dark markings on both webs of P4 are rare in ‘canus’. However, the pale mantle (barely darker than RBGU), dark iris, dull bill-base, and moderately extensive and streaky (rather than blotchy) head/neck markings are supportive of the subspecific ID of ‘canus’.
