Observation details
Small mixed flock of BESP and SABS around the west side of the pond. The determination of the Bell's Sparrow was made by considering the streakiness of the back and the darkness and thickness of the malars, and by comparison to birds that were present which are clearly SABS (see photos for that species). We think several birds are good candidates for BESP. The one on the wire (2 photos) has a few streaks on the outer back but none on the inner back, while the malar in the photo is black and grey. The second bird, in the 2 poor photos drinking at the pond, has very light streaks on the back (not dark like the SABS) and thick, black malars. The bird in the last photo also has very dark malars.
