Media notes
Same subject as ML 2884. One adult bird and two chicks were seen at one time - and during some of the calls. Other calls may or may not have been the same bird. No noticeable sound was made by the chicks. Adult is presumably female. Bird was standing still when seen calling. Repeated short chatter; "tic-it" calls. Habitat: Fresh water cattail marsh on golf course. BNA: The sharp "pit-ti-ti-tip" calls in the first part of this recording are given regularly by this species, but they do not appear to be described in BNA account (they may, however, represent the "kadic-kadic" call of Kaufmann, G. W. 1983. Displays and vocalizations of the Sora and the Virginia Rail. Wilson Bull. 95: 42-59). Based on above notes, this may represent either contact calls between an adult and chicks or an alarm call to the young. The second part contains "tick-it" calls. Most of these are quite distant, with the only quasi-useable series at 1:52-2:06. (CAM - 8 April 2005). Habitat: Wetland, Freshwater, Pond.
