Observation details
This immature bird was originally reported as Fasciated Tiger-heron. Our guide ID'd it as such, based primarily on habitat. After returning home and researching it, I am changing the report. GR comments: Photos taken from vehicle at some distance, and bird was deep in emergent vegetation, so detail is not great. Extensive pale lores extending above and behind eye, and fairly pale throat are visible, and would seem consistent with field-guide depictions of immature fasciated, while slow-moving stream location near the pacific coast might be more likely bare-throated habitat. Comparison of these photos with later photos of fasciated taken in upland stream habitat revealed this bird shows substantially longer bill length relative to head length, and paler bill color. Habitat, coastal location combined with comparison of bill morphology with known fasciated indicates this bird was a bare-throated.
