Observation details
Found 0943 approx 7.6 km south of beach access. Photographed. Initially found roosting in a tide rack about a metre from small mixed group of sand plovers, turnstone etc. The group then moved down to the water’s edge along with this bird, which we then watched at close quarters wading in the wet sand and shallow water and foraging on the edge of the tide. Small sandpiper (smaller than turnstone and Greater Sand Plover) with fine, short, straight black bill, blank facial expression, very dark-centred upperpart feathers with buff fringing, warm buff breast and yellow legs. White underwing seen while bird stretched its wings. Refound twice later on (1127 and 1236), within 200 m of initial location.
