Observation details
(25 NOV Record) Adult. After receiving expert input, I believe this was a Nazca Booby. Also seen by Robert Horn. Swung around the bay heading south. Seen within the kelp line. Chased by another bird, maybe 1st cycle WEGU or other dark gray bird (not really the focus of my attention). Robert thought the bill was maybe orangish pink. I didn’t have time to carefully note bill color in the field but I thought the bill was dull orangish or possibly dull yellow. In the video linked below, I only mention orange, as my impression was of orange, though I could not completely rule out a dull yellow. These and the following observations, along with species expectations, point to Nazca, as opposed to Masked. I had good looks at the uppers in the field: I noted distinct, high-contrast dark black and snow white with well-defined lines on the top. I clearly noted black wingtips, white lesser coverts (leading edge) and a dark trailing edge. No field notes on underwing or tail. Photos show a mostly white underwing with a completely dark trailing edge. Video: https://youtu.be/AvbZWXI4cjc Original video available upon request. Field notes on uppers rule out: BFBO, BRBO. NOGA Photos of underwings rule out RFBO, BRBO, BFBO, and probably NOGA too. (Additionally photos and my memory indicate a clean white nape)
