Observation details
Two birds, associated with a large mixed species feeding flock, that flew past the ferry as we approached. Big, heavy, deep-chested Skuas obviously more robust than Pomarine. The paler head and distinctive white flash on upper primaries identifies this species as South Polar Skua, a first for me and distinctively different from the Bonxie/Great Skuas that I have experience of. I believe this to be the 3rd record for South Polar Skua in Fiji - and the 1st for May.
