Observation details
Heard giving finch-like call I was unfamiliar with. Seen very briefly in flight and then perched high in conifer, but badly backlit. Got no colours but did not see any white in wing, bill seemed small, overall size larger than house finch. Managed one quick photo and bird was gone. Initial reaction was pine grosbeak, but wasn’t sure photo was adequate to say and, although the general tone of the calls matched recordings I had available I couldn’t find a good match to the specific call., which I characterized as “psi psi jup”. Both a couple of hours before, and shortly afterwards I had evening grosbeaks in the immediate vicinity, so I second guessed myself and concluded I must have been mistaken. Next morning I started scrolling through recordings in xeno-canto and found some for pine that closely matched what I had heard. Also sent photo to experts providing no context - just “can you identify this?” And the immediate response was “pine grosbeak”. It would be good to get additional analysis of the photo as this is not a species I have a lot of experience with.
