Observation details
**rare. Totally not expecting to see this bird, especially at this location in the middle of the bay. I'm guessing the bird was migrating last night and got put down on the water during the bad weather or badly missed poplar island. We first saw this bird a good distance away probably 50 yards but had good views through binoculars and it was clearly identifiable as a COGA. We did not get any photos so we circled back and came within 20 yards. Bird was very small about 12 inches long with a fairly short stout neck. Overall the color was a dark bluish gray with a brown upper back area. The tail was short and kind of pointed, the outer areas of the under tail had very prominent white markings separated by black up the center. The top edges of the side pockets and flanks had thin white edging. The head was slightly darker then the rest of the body and had unmistakable red shield on front of head with a red and yellow bill. I did not have my camera with me so attached are some really bad photos of the bird taken with a phone.
