Observation details
Spotted on the trail in some shallow water at lat/lng (35.8326640, -78.8099088). We startled each other. It quickly walked away from me before stopping. I also backed off in an attempt not to scare it further. Then I got some pictures. In hindsight, I probably could've gotten even more pictures or even video but I got greedy and tried to move to a better vantage point, after which it ran off into the thick brush. Before that it seemed relatively calm. Oh well. Lifer bird for me. In the moment I thought maybe it was a Sora as I didn't have any experience with these birds. Quite an encounter!
