Observation details
Recording of call in flight attached. Description: first thing I noticed was longer bill, unusually short legs, messier white on neck, extending further up than ‘usual’ (i.e. compared to an Australian Pied Oystercatcher), noticeably more white on wing bar, and striking white on the rump/back of wings in flight. We have resident Australian Pied Oystercatchers in the area that are normally in pairs and the reason this bird was checked in more detail (through binoculars) was that it was solo. The bird being on its own also meant size was almost impossible to judge. Following commentary from other experienced birders on the description and call, initial identification would seem validated. Admin comments welcome - especially regarding review of the sound recording.
