Observation details
The home owner, Bob Hall, called me last night to tell me he had this unusual woodpecker visiting a feeder in his yard. At about 3:30 today, I saw a flash of white as a bird with undulating flight crossed the field border just north of the residence. It perched long enough for confirming photos and satisfying looks. FRESH Juvenile bird with some red plumage emerging on mostly brown head, largest red patch near eye. Mottling on scapulars and coverts, white secondaries and rump. Underside otherwise similar to adult bird. I watched it fly around the edge of the woods, feed under the feeder, and perch on fence posts near the horses' barn. A nice surprise to see at this elevation!
