Observation details
A non-breeding plumage bird that had dark outer tail feathers, which ruled out Forster’s Tern. The black in the face was more extensive than a Forster’s would show now and slightly more extensive than a Common Tern. It had a small blackish bill with a slight tinge of red in good light. The lack of a strong carpal bar and no dark wedge in the upper primaries in flight was consistent with an Arctic, as well as the dark line along the trailing edge of the primaries. These patterns in the wings seem to rule out Common Tern. It was near marker 6, but after I walked down to marker 5, and returned, it was gone.
