Observation details
A dim and distant view of a loon on the Yukon River -- running with slush and ice. It was a large loon of Common or Yellow-billed size with a pale notch along the side of the neck between the pale throat and the darker nape; it's bill looked large and pale, head often held slightly upwards; and the back of the head was a pale sandy-brown, and face looked quite pale -- these features which are seen in the photos, all indicate Yellow-billed Loon. Any loon is very rare in the Yukon in winter. Postscript: This section of the river froze soon after our sighting; though on 5 January 2015 a Yellow-billed Loon was photographed by C. Eckert a couple of km upstream -- very likely the same bird.
