Observation details
Flew over pond with Black-necked Stilts from the Bolsa Chica area and landed in tree. White on neck, hanging out with a Great Egret. Confirmed by another birder who's also a field biologist. Additional Info: Picture is from a phone. You can barely see the Great Egret who was in the tree with the Heron. Heron flew over our heads from the Bolsa Chica area with reddish neck and a white line down the front of the neck which really stood out. I said to my birding friend, "Hey! Check out the white line down the neck of this bird." White belly and flanks, yellow legs. It landed on the top of a tree where we were able to continue looking at it with our binoculars. My initial thought was it was a Reddish Egret because of the reddish neck, but the white line was so remarkable. Next thought was it was possibly a Great Blue Heron, but the neck was too red.
