Observation details
A single royal tern in basic plumage was observed perched on the beach among various gull species. The bird was noticeably larger than Gray-hooded Gull and similar in size to Gray Gull. It had a relatively thick bill and a reduced amount of black on the head, for which reason it was identified as a Royal Tern and not as the more common Elegant Tern. The white band with black letters was clearly readable on some of the photographs, showing the three-letter code 4VT. The bird was reported to the Bird Banding Lab of Patuxent Wildlife Research Center, through https://www.pwrc.usgs.gov/bbl/bblretrv, and was assigned the reference ID number 300375.
