Observation details
#17 0827 SWHA Watched a dark hawk settle on the eastern Black Cherry south of Fort Jay. Took a few photos. Heavily spotted belly and a nearly completely spotted chest. Underparts cream with large, dark brown spots. Bill small compared to a RT. Face light with an eye line. Eye appears light. Tail banded like a young RT. Wings extended to the tip of the tail. Very calm. Tried to get a dorsal view as it was facing Nolan Park and [before I could get to the west side of the Black Cherries] it left at ~0837. I didn't see which direction it headed towards. Sent images to Gabriel Willow and he returned with an ID while I was in the field. [Text added in square brackets on 8-Dec-2020. It was noted that the description alone may not have passed muster for an ID of this species. So lucky that I was able to get to my backpack ~150 yard round trip according to Google Maps to get my camera and snap off a few point-and-shoot images. The description was done in the field before I remembered that a photo would be better and was lucky that the hawk remained.]
