Observation details
Large grebe spotted while scanning Long Island Sound for the many Red-throated Loons. Conditions were excellent as there was almost no wind, water flat and glassy, cloudy so sun glare and heat haze was not a factor. The grebe had a very long and thin neck which was a clean white in front and a thin dark blackish looking stripe on the back. The olive colored bill was long, thin, and straight. Only observed the bird sitting on the water and feeding as well as diving, but never seen in flight. I presume this is the same bird photographed by Russ Smiley a week ago at Cornfield Point in Old Saybrook. Photos provided by Dan Rottino and taken by MOB. This was a case of being in the right place at the right time under ideal conditions. Although I came to the park in search of a Vesper Sparrow that was found yesterday, I chose to scan the sound first which is always my preference. I saw conditions were optimal to look for loons and waterfowl and I knew I could search for the sparrow afterwards.
