Observation details
**MEGA** This bird was a first record for the Cayuga Lake Basin and Tompkins County. Likely deposited here after the passing of Major Hurricane Ike, which transited just northwest of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario as an Extratropical Storm, extinguishing about September 15, 2008. First found by Tom Johnson and Shawn Billerman as it flew over Myers Point Town Park in Lansing, NY earlier on this day. Seen by **many** birders. Extremely large black seabird, floating very distantly and high in the sky. Very long narrow pointed wings with an appearance of a long "pointed" tail projection and pointed head projection. Wings held up and arched in an "M" shape. No flapping, just continuous kiting. Later located roosting along the Cayuga Inlet, opposite Treman Marina, and submitted as a separate report from that location. Found deceased the next day. This individual was donated to the Cornell University Museum of Vertebrates and is now in the collection. Specimen number unknown.
