Brewer's Sparrow at Gaviota State Park, Santa Barbara County, CA

Observation details

While watching the Tropical Kingbird I heard the thin calls of a sparrow in the brush next to me not 10' away. I could make out two small, pale colored sparrows moving deep in the brush but not clearly visible to me. I backed up and got a better angle to watch the birds and coaxed them out with pishing. One flew out and crossed the creek, the second moved into view where I photographed it before it flew in the same direction. I identified these as Brewer's Sparrows from the photos by the grayish nape with fine streaking on the crown extending to the back of the neck, brown auriculars, pale overall with a light brown mantle with fine dark brown streaking, pale lores, and a faint whitish eye-ring. The bill was pinkish and small. It appeared long-tailed when it flew away.
