Observation details
The mesa around the end of Bolsa Chica St was active with kingbirds. Several Westerns were associating together and flycatching from the chain link fence around the small lot in the north corner. My attention was drawn to an unusually yellow kingbird flycatching from a bush nearby that did not seem to associate with the Westerns. The yellow was very strong on the belly and extended upward onto the breast. The breast had a weak olive or dingy tint to the yellow. The yellow met with a whitish throat patch with no evidence of light gray (Western) or dark gray (Cassin's). The back was greenish. The head was pale gray like a Western with a slightly darker gray eye stripe. The bill was black and comparatively long for a Western/Cassin's. The tail did not exhibit either a white tip (Cassin's) or obvious white edging (Western) though viewing conditions were not favorable (bright glare from a thinning marine layer) to see white contrasted against the gray sky. The tail appeared notched though my views of that feature were not very good. I tried approaching closer for better looks and photos but encountered a rattlesnake. The bird disappeared while I was distracted by and making a retreat from the snake.
