Observation details
Seen similarly to Kate Magoon's experience; only seen in flight, flying low over the vegetation and making an occasional passes overhead. Seen initially at 8:00PM and watched it fly south over the willows/bluff where the background made it difficult to follow and then lost. We attempted to locate it at several parking/open trail locations around the head and bluff with no luck. There was quite a lot of car traffic (weekend) which may have resulted in it relocating to a more remote location in the area. Will attempt on 8/31 to find its day roost. Would assume same individual based on molt seen in other checklist (missing middle recs and some primaries). My initial thought when viewing this bird in flight was also Lesser based on how light it was in the dim setting and the white patches that almost appear at the tips of the primaries. Will assess more in the AM. Very few confirmed records for Sonoma, let alone chaseable.
