Observation details
A small black and white shorebird was first seen flying north, low over river. It was first thought to be a RUTU until it landed in the river, so a phalarope was then likely. Very distant photos taken of bird bobbing on wind-whipped river surface and then flying off show white underside, white face with prominent black patch over eye, a long thin black bill, a dark back with some streaking, pale neck with perhaps some red wash, and a white stripe (coverts) running from shoulder almost to wing tip. Consulting the Merlin app in the field, a juvenile REPH seemed to match the images taken. However, Frank M looked at the images on camera back display and thought RNPH more likely.
