Observation details
*rare; scoping Whale Pt from the dune adjacent to Slough, when a Harrier came down low over reeds and spooked a couple of shorbs. The smaller peeps took off in the direction of Whale Pond, while a distinctly larger bird came at me practically head-on, before brushing by and heading W. Occasionally, the bird uttered a low, gutteral "j'rrrt", queuing me into it being a BASA. I managed to get some crappy flight pix as the bird flew by, enough to show the size of the bird and the proportion of the wings. The back is a uniform brown, with no evidence of a white rump. As the bird flew over me, I noticed contrastingly black markings on the underwing.
