Observation details
It was thrilling to go on the hunt for the first booming Frogmouth deep in the Rail's wild gully; while I could even hear the bird taking in great breaths of air, I didn't see it, and eventually cut my losses. However, I ended up getting a massive surprise later on!! My headlamp had long since died, and I was finally getting close to home when, in the red light of my cameras flash (an impromptu torch!), I was astonished to see a beefy, curmudgeonly Frogmouth perched on the tiniest brach at about knee height directly in front of me!! Thus, with a little help from my valiantly struggling headlamp, I couldn't resist a photoshoot; for that story alone, these are surely some of my favourite photos of Frogmouths...
