Observation details
Long staying bird continues. First seen on August 15. White underparts with gray smuding on flanks. Medium gray back and wings with blackish primaries. White neck and head marked by a small dark gray patch at the rear of the crown that narrowed and ran down the back of the neck to the back. Broad black eye patch. Short, thick, blunt tipped bill was black with a tiny yellow spot at the base of the lower mandible. It stood in the shallows and preened a bit today whereby I could see remnants of rufous color on the rump. A low flying gull flushed it and it flew to another pond indicating it is not weak or ill.
