Observation details

Heard an unfamiliar flight call of a shorebird and saw with binoculars that it looked like a Semipalmated Plover, but calling unlike any I had ever heard. I was not intimately familiar with the call of a Common Ringed Plover, but suspected this species. I scrambled for my phone as the bird flew away, but missed my opportunity...or so I thought. I heard it coming back through the fog and it circled right above me and then off again over the water. I did not see it land or hear it again. Scanned the mudflat of Elk Creek (where I was scoping) but did not see it there either. Based on the sonogram, I believe this to be a COMMON RINGED PLOVER with a mostly flatline intro followed by a small rounded hill (I am poorly described the visual of the sonogram here). In contrast, the flight call of a SEPL not only sounds much different, but the sonogram looks like is has a right-handed checkmark in the middle of it.
