Observation details
Adult found earlier by Frank Haas. Adult in beginning stages of molt into basic plumage, gray-headed and clean orange-bellied overall. A few replaced secondary coverts, and p1-4 growing in in a block (unless that's p1-3 and it just lost p4). Inland, freshwater primary molt confirms LBDO on its own (SBDO wait to reach the coast). Inner covert markings fine and light orange. Black bars in tail about as wide as white. Bill long, finely tapered, finely tipped and slightly drooping (not kinked), and bill base graduated smoothly. Thick black bars on flanks and leftover small black bars on sides, spotting in breast. Belly markings worn clean away. Underwing coverts quite light, particularly near the body. Not particularly "hunch-backed", which is a poor ID point anyway. Bird took an exploratory flight south, west then east for several minutes then returned to the stream. Keek calls, called a number of times in flight and when crossing stream. Gorgeous specimen and a lot of fun to spend an evening with! Thanks Frank!
