Observation details
Dark under tail, white in front of eye. Smallish size overall. This bird was clearly weakened, but able to fly short distances. It was back on the water when I left it at the north end of pelican spit. Two days after the passing of TS Isaias. There was another Audubon’s shearwater wash-up on July 27th on Sea Island, but that bird died shortly after discovery by a naturalist. Additionally, a third AUSH was found dead on Cumberland Island beach by Patrick Leary earlier in July. There have been a number of other pelagic species sightings from the beach in the surrounding counties in recent months including great shearwater, Wilson’s storm petrel, magnificent frigatebird and sooty shearwater.
