Observation details
Continuing bird found by Charity Hagen on 7/22/20. This evening we viewed it in the very shallow pond area of the larger back basin pond, near levee mile marker 2 1/2. Coordinates: 33°38’33.97”N, 117°19’45.54”W. Actively feeding nearly the entire time of our observations. Silent. Smaller and slimmer than the Long-billed Dowitcher that is was associating with part of the time. Apparent adult, just transitioning out of alternate plumage. Medium long and dark slightly downward curved bill. White eyebrows and a dark line from bill to eye. Chestnut crown and blush of chestnut on face behind eyes. Back was a blend of browns/dark browns/some black. Heavy barring on breast and underside. Greenish yellow legs and feet. The bird flew only once, just a short distance to the same pond, but was obscured by plants. Several photos will be attached.
