Observation details
Brad Murphy and I stopped because I heard a Mexican Chickadee out my truck window while driving the switchback above Pinery Canyon. I wanted to get a photo of the Chickadee. While listening for the chickadee again, we heard an Eared Quetzal singing downhill along the stream. Wow! This was incredible. What are the chances? Brad drove down first while I kept tabs on the bird. From upslope I guided him to where the bird was perched. Once he was on the bird, I drove down to join him. The bird was a singing first summer male Eared Quetza. It was near the old campground in Pinery Canyon. Coordinates are: 31.55’59”N, -109.16’22” W. The bird was moving up and down this stretch singing and calling nearly continuously. It acted like it was searching for a mate or establishing a territory. The bird was very vocal and active. It even flew down and drank from the small stream. It clearly prefered the pines to sing from but was almost always easily visible. By comparing photos of this bird to the stakeout bird on the other side of the mountain, it is clearly the same bird. Great photos obtained all from the road. The bird would watch us but seemed relatively unconcerned. What a great experience. More notes and better photos to follow.
