Observation details
Enormous, dwarfing the Turkey Vultures nearby. 5 adults, 2 immatures. All black vultures with short tails and broad square wings in flight, and long "fingers" on the wings in flight. Adults had bright white axillaries with white area extending in a thin stripe to the underwing coverts; immatures were dull white in this region (but whiter than remainder of underparts). Adults had orangeish heads. For a while we thought there were 6 birds (4 adults and 2 immatures) and we got photos of 6 individuals, but at one point we counted 5 adults in the air. One immature in particularly fresh plumage (presumably a younger bird) was apparently untagged. Five of the birds landed next to the road. Tags on adults: - 94 white letters on black - 74 white letters on blue - 89 black letters on yellow - 33 white letters on green - one unknown. Tags on immatures: - 80 black letters on white - One untagged.
