Media notes
(Yes, I know that I need to clean the slide and rescan it. Until then, this photo will suffice).
Observation details
Flushed by Tylan Dean, who was dragging ropes through the dry prairie to flush Grasshopper Sparrows as part of a USFWS-permitted study of the sparrow's winter ecology. I must have been in one of my cameraless periods at the time, as I borrowed a 35 mm SLR camera from Richard "Bubba" Owen, a colleague working on another project. I shot an entire roll of slide film of the rail, which was then released unharmed. Somebody else took the roll of film and had the slides developed. I was given one slide to keep (given that I took the images!), while others kept the rest. I heard several years later that all of the other slides were thought to have been lost, so this image is now the only source of documentation of this epic record. A scan of my slide was published in American Birds (52:140, 1998) and is also embedded here; I still have the original slide in my possession.
