Observation details
Since early spring, I’ve heard Yellow-bellied Sapsucker calls and songs in my neighbourhood. Finally, at sunset on May 17, I got a brief but clear look at a Sapsucker with my naked-eye. It flew to the base of an aspen tree within 2 feet of the lawn surface. The sapsucker was within 8 to 10 m of me at a location near my driveway. Then I observed the bird with binoculars. It clearly was not a red breasted sapsucker. Instead, it looked like a yellow-bellied sapsucker. It had a red crown and red throat. A black zig-zag pattern went through its eye (a male). A side-profile of the bird revealed a continuous, black border at its red throat. The Sapsucker flew to my side of the street. Then I recorded its song with my iPhone 7 and a Voice Record Pro app as it moved away from me.
