Observation details
Hermit Thrush opens its malar feathers to enhance the amplitude while singing. In the second song set, NOTE the chip notes associated with this bird. There was a female close by and they were interacting when I first approached. The male flew directly above me allowing these recordings. He was opening some feathers and I was trying to capture the chip notes which are noted above. I am fascinated with the role the malar feathers play in bird song and the control exhibited to produce the amazingly complex series notes we hear with HETH. These are OLD SONGS, old stories passed generationally and we have these moments to gathers those stories and make some sense of them. All Thrush have a complexity carefully selected for. It is the story of each individual that draws us all so near when it calls. Ancient stories are always long and complicated.
